Aaka X – Mafulong

Aaka X goes pastoral with “Mafulong”, a one-word Sesotho title that can be read as “at the pastures”.
In Sesotho, mafulo are grazing lands, and the -ng ending turns a word into a place. That gives the title the feel of somewhere you travel to, in memory or on the map, and not just a mood. Grazing land also carries ideas of home, cattle, family and the village, which Basotho listeners tend to pick up quickly.
Two other Sesotho-titled releases from Aaka X, O Loma o Fodisa and Ka Moya, are circulating alongside this one. That points to an artist who keeps his language at the front of the project and does not translate it for anyone.
A title that names a place invites the listener to go there. Anyone who has ever missed the land they grew up on will understand why.
