AN ANCIENT ECHO – Ekpere

AN ANCIENT ECHO opens the Echoes of Mercy collection on its knees, in a manner of speaking, with Ekpere, the Igbo word for prayer, as plain and honest as a title can be.
Anyone raised in an Igbo household knows prayer is not kept for Sunday. It happens at dawn before the compound wakes, at the dinner table before the first spoon, and in the quiet corners of the day when words run out. A title this plain tells you the song is about that everyday habit and not some grand event.
The album it belongs to, Echoes of Mercy, adds to that reading. Mercy is what people usually ask for when they pray, so a record placed in that project naturally sits close to that request. Ekpere works as a doorway into the whole collection, because prayer is where most conversations about mercy begin.
What I find interesting is that the title is a single word. Nobody needs a long sentence to understand it. A Nigerian listener hears it and already knows the mood: calm, honest, a little tired and still hopeful. It sounds like a word you say softly, even when you are only reading it.
This is a song for the early morning, the long night shift, or that moment after bad news when you need to sit down and say something to God. Some records fit those hours better than anything loud ever could.
